Les Rencontres de la Photographie di Arles rappresentano uno degli appuntamenti annuali imprescindibili per il mondo della fotografia e, di conseguenza, anche per chi segue con interesse l’editoria fotografica. Ogni estate la città francese diventa un punto d’incontro internazionale per fotografi, editori, collezionisti e appassionati, offrendo un calendario ricco di occasioni per scoprire le novità editoriali, incontrare autori e case editrici e approfondire il libro fotografico in tutte le sue forme.
Tra gli appuntamenti del programma ufficiale 2026 spicca «L is for Look», mostra curata da Anna Lacoste dedicata ai libri fotografici per l’infanzia. L’esposizione raccoglie oltre cento pubblicazioni, dal primo Novecento ai giorni nostri, e racconta il processo creativo di un libro fotografico attraverso volumi esposti sotto teca, stampe, materiali preparatori e bozze originali. Il percorso è affiancato da libri consultabili e installazioni interattive pensate sia per i bambini sia per gli adulti, sottolineando l’importanza dell’educazione all’immagine fin dalla più giovane età.
Il festival dedica inoltre grande attenzione al sostegno della produzione editoriale attraverso due premi ormai consolidati: il Book Award e il LUMA Rencontres Dummy Book Award. Il primo, promosso dalla Fondation Jan Michalski, ha raccolto quest’anno oltre 850 candidature ed è articolato in tre categorie – Author’s Book Award, Historical Book Award e Photo-Text Book Award – ciascuna dotata di un premio di 6.000 euro. I vincitori dell’edizione 2026 sono Passports di Keisha Scarville (MACK, 2026), Spirals di Juliette Pavy (Four Eyes éditions, 2025) e Not a Cookbook di Robby Reis (TBW, 2025).
Dal 2015 il LUMA Rencontres Dummy Book Award sostiene fotografi emergenti e artisti che utilizzano la fotografia come linguaggio espressivo, premiando il miglior prototipo di libro inedito. Il riconoscimento ammonta a 25.000 euro, di cui 3.000 destinati ai diritti d’autore. Per l’edizione 2026 sono stati presentati oltre 250 progetti, e il vincitore, annunciato ieri sera, è Otto Hainzl con Europastrasse. Lo scorso anno il premio era stato assegnato a Nata Drachinskaya per Binom, poi pubblicato da BLOW UP PRESS e presentato al pubblico proprio in questi giorni.
La settimana inaugurale è anche il momento dell’Arles Books Fair, appuntamento di riferimento per esplorare il panorama dell’editoria fotografica contemporanea. Gli spazi dell’École Nationale Supérieure de la Photographie e del Collège Saint-Charles ospitano decine di editori provenienti da tutto il mondo, accompagnati da un fitto calendario di presentazioni, firmacopie e incontri con gli autori.
Accanto al programma ufficiale, Arles vive anche grazie a una costellazione di iniziative indipendenti. Fotobus Society con il suo iconico autobus è sede di mostre dedicate ai finalisti del Fotobus Library Award e di numerosi talk. Dienacht Publishing ha inaugurato una pop-up gallery in rue Fauré con esposizioni, presentazioni e firmacopie, mentre Sun/sun édition ha proposto un calendario diffuso di eventi in diversi luoghi della città lungo tutta la settimana. Venerdì 10 luglio si è svolto inoltre The Swiss Pocket Book Fair, ospitata dal Café Crème con la partecipazione di CIAO Press, Èditions Images Vevey ed Edition Patrick Frey.
Infine, una visita ad Arles non può dirsi completa senza una tappa alla libreria Actes Sud e alla Librairie du Palais, quest’ultima animata durante il festival da un ricco programma di conferenze e book signing.

Les Rencontres de la Photographie in Arles is one of the must-attend annual events for the world of photography and, consequently, for anyone with an interest in photographic publishing. Every summer, the French city becomes an international hub for photographers, publishers, collectors, and enthusiasts, offering a packed schedule of opportunities to discover new publications, meet authors and publishers, and explore the photographic book in all its forms.
Among the highlights of the 2026 official program is «L is for Look», an exhibition curated by Anna Lacoste dedicated to children’s photography books. The exhibition brings together over one hundred publications, spanning from the early 20th century to the present day, and explores the creative process behind a photography book through volumes displayed in glass cases, prints, preparatory materials, and original drafts. The exhibition is complemented by books available for browsing and interactive installations designed for both children and adults, underscoring the importance of visual literacy from a very young age.
The festival also places great emphasis on supporting book publishing through two well-established awards: the Book Award and the LUMA Rencontres Dummy Book Award. The former, sponsored by the Fondation Jan Michalski, received over 850 submissions this year and is divided into three categories – Author’s Book Award, Historical Book Award, and Photo-Text Book Award – each carrying a prize of 6,000 euros.
